PROBATION GRANTED.

A FARMER’9 OFFENCE. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 11. Edward Vincent Carthew, aged 28, appeared for sentence to-day on a charge of being found without lawful excuse early this morniing on the steamer Niagara. Counsel said Carthew was sorry for what had occurred. He realised the trouble was due to liquor. He owned a farm at Te Rapa, and was prepared to take out a prohibition order . Mr Wyvern Wilson admitted Carthew to probation for two years on condition that he should absolutely abstain from alcohol during that time.
