INTERVALS BETWEEN RACES. CLUB TO SHOW CAUSE. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 10. The Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, at its meeting tonight, decided to summon the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club to the next meeting of the Board to show cause why it should not bo dealt with for a breach of rule 115, which determines the interval between races. Under this rule the interval is fixed at 35 minutes, whereas the club’s printed programme to-day provided for an interval of 40 minutes. WOTAN’S LINE. THE NUMBER 13 FAMILY. Wotan, tliei latest winner of the Melbourne Cup, is a member of the No. 13 family and traces to Kite, ancestress of Juliet, the other great representative of this family in New Zealand. Hebrew Maid, his grandam, was imported by Mr J. F. Buchanan in 1906 in foal to Melton, the resulting progeny being Lovelorn, who won three races for Mr Buchanan before being retired to the stud. Hebrew Maid has been one of the most successful of recent importations, as her descendants include Nones, Menelaus, Palestrina, Jericho, Motere, Peter Jackson, Gaine Carrington and Wotan. Left, dam of the three last-named is one of the great bargains in brood mares. When she first went to the stud she was owned by Mr R, Grace. Her first foal, by Nassau, died and the

next season she missed to Leighton. The following season she was raced, and then Messrs Smith Bros, acquired her for a price which is stated to have been £75 and bred three great winners from fier. Like most great stayers of recent years, Wotan is strongly inbred to Touchstone, there being no fewer than ninei strains in the first five removes. Three of these come through Hampton, two through Scottish Chief, and the others through Vespasian, Petrach, Wenlock and Hermit, Apart from this, the main feature of the pedigree is inbreeding to S.tockwell through Bend Or, Blair Athol, and Springfield. RECORD YEARLING HAND TWO COSTING £26,500 Five of the valuable yearlings owned by the Hon. Miss Dorothy Paget are to bo trained for next year by Frank Butters at Newmarket. They include the 15,000 gs Doncaster purchase, the colt by Fairway out or Orwell’s dam Golden Hair, and Radiant, the ownsister to Windsor Lad, for whom Miss Paget paid 11,500 gs at the Newmarket July Sales. With these youngsters and the choice-ly-bred stock from the Aga Khan’s studs, Butters will start .next season with the most valuable collection of two-year-olds ever sheltered in one stable. Donald Snow will continue to tram the other flat-racers owned by Miss Paget. Golden Miller is with Owen Anthony, but five others of Miss Jaget’s jumpers have been handed to Walter Nightingall. GRANDSON OF CARBINE The 1926 Melbourne Cup winner Spearfelt, grandson of Carbine, looks like having another sensational year in Queensland. Although the season is but three months over, his progeny have credited him with a stake total approaching the £5600 mark, the result of 25 wins. Spearfelt is proving himself a prolific getter of winners, both over sprint and distance courses, and on all types of tracks. Ho has a particularly fine representation among the present crop of youngsters, and they may be expected to take a big hand in the early classics.
