COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondent*.) CHERTSEY. THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The president (Mrs J. W. Watson) presided at the monthly meeting of the Chertsey Women’s Institute. One new member was welcomed. It was decided to take part in the group competition, to be held, in Ashburton, and also to support a group meeting to be held at Rakaia on September 29, when Miss V. Macmillan and Miss 11. Apple, of the Association for Country Education, will be the speakers. It was decided to help the lepers at Makogai this year. A talk and demonstration on the preserving of fruit was given by Mrs H. O. Page. She was the recipient of a shopping bag on her departure from the district. The presentation was made by the president, and a small gift was also given for Mr Page. The competitions resulted as follow: Dress, to cost ss: Senior, Mrs H. J. Wilson 1, Miss L. Murehie 2; junior, Miss N. Robinson 1, Mrs H. Watson 2. Apple pie: Mrs H. J. Wilson 1, Mrs H. Copland 2, Mrs F. Richards 3. Vegetable: Mrs A. P. Bruce 1, Mrs F. Richards 2, Miss Mavis Burrowes 3. Bloom: Mrs W. and Miss K. Lambie (equal) 1, Mrs A. P. Bruce and, Mrs J. Doig (equal) 2, Mrs H. Copland and Mrs F. Richards (equal) 3.

ASHTON-WATERTON. THE' WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Mrs Shimmins presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashton-Waterton Women’s Institute held in the Waterton Hall on Thursday afternoon. Miss V. Bell and Miss Bice were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting to be held at Mount Somers. An interesting demonstration on making d,oor-mats was given by Miss E. Wotton, who was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions, judged by Mrs Allan, resulted: —Daffodils, Miss E. Read 1, Miss Wotton 2, Mrs Shimmins and Miss F. Bell (equal) 3 ; wool teacosy, Mrs Shimmins 1, Miss E. Read 2, Misses F. Bell and M. Blee (equal) 3; novelty article from a sugar-bag, Miss E. Read 1, Mrs Shimmins 2, Miss F. Bell 3. The hostesses were Misses E. Wotton and E. Soal.
