WHEAT SHORTAGE.
MINISTER’S ADVICE TO GROWERS PLANT NORMAL AREAS. fPer Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 5. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) stated to-day that in view of the world shortage of wheat New Zealand growers would be well advised to sow as much wheat as possible. In many districts, he said, the most promising wheats to sow in September were Jumbuck and Marquis, the first of which commanded a premium of 2d per bushel over the Tuscan price, while Marquis brought 4d per bushel over the Tuscan price It was too early to dscuss next year’s prices, hut growers would ho taken into consideration when fixing prices for wheat. In the meantime he could state that a final payment of 4d per bushel on the 1936 crop was in sight, but the final figures would not be available until all the 1936 wheat had been dealt with.
The Government had wholeheartedly gone into the wheat question to encourage the growing of our own wheat and to give the New Zealand grower the full benefit of the local market, and he expected the grower to respond to the encouragement given. This year, in view of the world position, the Government- was doubly anxious that there should be no shortage in New Zealand, and he therefore urged growers whereover possible to ensure that they planted their normal areas.
