FRUIT AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET. The Ashburton fruit and produce market has experienced a quiet week, only a few changes being reported on the market. A plentiful supply of apples is coming in; and cooking apples have cheapened in price. Pears have almost disappeared from the market. Swedes and parsnips are both 6d a bag cheaper in price. Walnuts are also slightly cheaper. Prices are:— Strawberry Plants—ls 6d. a dozen. Potatoes, Seed (Early)—l&d and 2d. Potatoes—2s 6d a sugar-bag. Bacon—lOd and lid a lb. Wheat—Seconds, 12s to 13s a sack. Clover Seed—6d a lb. Honey—6£d to 7d a lb Onions—ld and l|d a lb. Walnuts—7d a lb. Dessert Apples—od to 6s a case. Cooking Apples—2s 6d to 3s 6d a case Cabbages—3d and 4d. Carrots—ls 6d a sugar-bag. Pears—2s 6d to 3s a case. Swedes—ls a sugar-bag. Parsnips—ls 6d a sugar-bag. Cauliflowers—4s. ss, and 6s a dozen. The Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association report holding a sale of sheepskins on Friday, when fair-sized catalogues were submitted. Competition was keen and prices were fully up to late rates. The following was the range of values:— Sound. Faulty.

GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Sept. 4. Few orders for seed wheat are being received and it looks as if the quantity of wheat to be sown this season will be considerably less than in previous years. Fowl wheat market is quoted at 4s 9d a bushel, sacks extra ex truck. The oat market remains unchanged. Prices are firmer with quotations for A Gartons ranging from 3s 4d to 3s 5d f.0.b.5.i., and B’s at 3s lsd. The chaff market remains steady at £4 10s a ton, ex trucks and ex store at £5. The value of freshly picked lines of Arran Chief potatoes is £4 10s a ton sacks included, with King Edwards worth £5.

Business in seeds has quietened down in so far as export trade is concerned but local seed firms report good business with farmers. Prices for all lines remain steady.

WHEAT MARKETS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, September 3. Wheat cargoes show ail improved inquiry. Parcels are quiet. Futures are quoted : London—August 33s Id per quarter, November 33s 6d. Liverpool—October 7s 21d per cental, December 7s March 6s 10^d. Spot trade is quiet. Australian ex ship is quoted at 40s to 40s 6d. Flour is quiet. Australian, ex store, 265.

DAIRY PRODUCE IN LONDON. (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 4. The butter market is irregular. Quo;ations are: Danish 1265, New Zealand

and Australian choicest salted 114 s, unsalted 115 s. Cheese— New Zealand white 69s 6d, coloured 66a 6d.

CHARGES INCREASED. DAIRY PRODUCE FREIGHT. DUNEDIN, September 4. An increase of from 2) per cent, to 3 per cent (New Zealand currency) in freight charges on butter and cheese, as from September 1, is reported. Under the old contract, which expired on August 31, freight charges were payable in New Zealand, and the shipping companies stood up to 10 per cent, of the total exchange, and dairy factories paid the balance. Under the new contract, all freight charges are to bo paid in London in British currency.
