THE STAGE.
REGAINING ITS POPULARITY. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sepet. 4. “I found the legitimate theatre has regained its old popularity. In fact, it is booming,” said Mr Stuart F. Doyle, managing director of British Empire Films, Ltd., New Zealand, who is passing through Auckland by the Monterey on his return to Australia after a six months’ world tour. In the West End of 'London, lie said, the price for seats was as high as £\, and the theatres were full. In America great preparations were being made for the coming seson, and it looked, as though, not withstanding the opposition of the pictures, the stage had come hack into its own.
Great developments had taken place in the British film industry. Millions of pounds of British capital was being spent in building the most modern studios in the world. “New Zealand ranks as the best country outside England, in proportion to the population, and the Secretary of State for the Dominions (Mr Malcolm MacDonald) told me, when I dined with him, that the co-operation of New Zealand was greatly appreciated by the Government.”
