A BELEAGUERED CITY.
SHOOTINGS AT ADDIS ABABA. THE FOOD SUPPLY CRITICAL. (United Pres 9 Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, September 4. “The Manchester Guardian” pub.lishes a dispatch from Addis Ababa emphasising that the capital is so far from being the paradise it is officially claimed. It has been almost a beleaguered city since July. The defence works are carried right into the centre of the town, and every two or three days there is panic caused by shooting. The food supply is critical, flour, sugar and salt being unobtainable. Many of the troops complain that they are half starved.
The Italians have not yet established efficient administration, though they show plenty of goodwill. The situation is made worse by quarrels and jealousies between the Fascist militia and the regular army.
