NO DECISION
APPLICATION FOR AN AWARD.
UNFORMED UNION OPPOSITION. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 4. Tn unusual position arose in the Arbitration Court this morning when an application was heard for an award h.v the sports goods workers’ section of the Auckland Furniture Trades Industrial Union of Workers. The application was opposed by the employers on the grounds that one comprehensive award was desirable, and by a proposed union to be known as the Auckland Sports Goods Employees’ Industrial Union ; which has applied for registration. The registrar has advised that the application of the last-named is being held up pending a decision in the present industrial dispute. Mr W. E. D’Audney, who appeared for the proposed union, was closely questioned by Mr A. L. Monteith, the employees’ representative in the court, regarding a statement that he had paid the inaugural expenses of the proposed union, that no members had paid any fees, and that Mr D’Audney would be reimbursed after the union was registered.
Mr Monteith told Mr D’Audney that he represented no one but himself, and suggested that the proposed union, which did not exist, was sponsored by the employers. Mr D’Audney denied this, but said that the employers had been agreeable. Mr Justice Page: You understand the position to be that if registration is not granted you have no standing? Mr D’Audney: Yes. The court reserved its decision.
