BIRCHING ORDERED.

FIVE BOYS BEFORE COURT. (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS, Sept. 2. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Mr J. Miller, S.M., ordered that five boys bo given six strokes of the birch each, as a deterrent and warning to other boys who might be imbued with the gang spirit. The boys faced 24 charges of theft of jewellery and other articles, including two rifles, and of receiving stolen goods. One boy, described by the police as the leader of the gang, pleaded not guilty', but after evidence was heard lie was convicted and committed, to an industrial school. The other four boys were placed under the supervision of the welfare officer. The police said that the lead<?f had not taken a big part in the actual thefts. He collected stolen articles and when he was hard up disposed of some and pocketed the money himself.
