BAD COOKING

WASTE OF MUCH GOOD FOOD. MR T. C. A. HISLOP'S CHALLENGE REMARKS AT PLUNKET MEETING (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Can New Zealand! women cook? The Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) rather thinks they cannot, and, what is more, he said so at an assembly mainly of women—the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society. “How many of you ladies sitting here can put your hands on a woman who can cook.” he challenged, and hastily added, “other than yourselves.” The audience exchanged glances when the Mayor pressed on with the remark: “The amount of goodi food ruined by bad cooking is shocking.”

Air Hislop said his observations might not be popular, but they were true. Ho supposed he would get into trouble for such an opinion. If the society desired to enlarge its activities, why not teach the women, of New Zealand how to cook properly. In defence of his own household, the Alayor said he was not speaking as one who had suffered through bad cook T ing. Mr Hislop also added, that the cooking in most hotels in New Zealand! was appalling. ;
