Ski-ing downhill at Mount Ruapehu at a speed of between 50 and 60 miles an hour, Mr L. V. Bryant, who was a member of the Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition in 1934, struck a bank of snow yesterday and fell heavily. After courageously struggling 1000 feet down to Salt Hut he was found to have broken his right ankle and two ribs, and to have suffered injury to his right knee. Mr Bryant is on the staff of the W aikato High School. He was borne on a stretcher to the Chateau road, and sent by train to Hamilton. TWO MEN DROWNED. MOTOR OAR FALLS INTO STREAM. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 23. Two men were drowned in a motor accident at Waingaro, 16 miles west of Ngaruawahia. early this morning. The victims were—
Mr John Stevens, aged 62, a widower. . , Mr William Cole, aged 26, a single man. Both were miners of Glen Afton. They were passengers in a car which left the road and fell 30 feet into a stream which was in flood. Heavy rain was falliing at the time. The bodies have not yet been recovered. Two other occupants of the car scrambled ashore. HEAD-ON COLLISION. FOUR PERSONS INJURED. WELLINGTON, AugusF 23. In a head-on smash between two cars on the main road near Waiganae this morning, four persons were injured. In one car those hurt were —•
Mrs F. W. Petherwick, Wellington, concussion, severe head and chest injuries, condition very serious. Mr F. W. Petherwick, her husband, head injuries. Miss Eileen Murphy, Wellington, badly cut arm. In the other car were Mr W. A. Waters (Power Board engineer, Palmerston North) and his son, W. Waters, aged 15, who had an arm "broken and his face cut, and also receivied a violent blow on the head. The father was not badly hurt. Mr and Mrs Petherwick are in hospital at Wellington and the hoy at Palmerston North. The cars wore badly smashed. TWO FOOTBALLERS INJURED. AUSTRALIAN MAY BE OUT FOR TOUR, AUCKLAND, August 23. Two players were injured during Saturday’s Rugby match between Auckland and Australia. Cooper, an Auckland forward, retired in the first spell with a broken collarbone. Cerutti, an Australian forward, played through part of the game with a cheek injury. An X-ray examination this morning revealed that two malar bones were broken. He may not play again on the tour. FATAL ELECTRIC SHOCK. GREYMOUTH, August 23. Mr Peter Watt, aged 28, an electrician employed on the Maori Gully dredge, was engaged in carrying out an inspection of the machinery oil the Brian Boru dredge at German Gully near Ngahere this afternoon when he received a fatal electric shock. FALL FROM BICYCLE. Suffering from a broken arm, the result of a fall from a bicycle, a boy named Hugh McLay, residing at Ruapuna, was admitted to Warwick Hospital on Saturday. After treatment lie was taken to liis home.
