The passengers were killed when the Imperial Airways flying-boat Scipio was wrecked in a crash landing on the Bay of Mirabella on the way from Alexandria to Brindisi, carrying mail presumably for Australia. An S.O.S. from the aeroplane announced engine trouble, forcing it down at Mirabella. A gust of wind caught the aeroplane, swung it off its balance and it crashed in choppy.) seas. Vessels dashed to the rescue and found the ’plane already sunk. Boats rescued the survivors. Those killed were Mr P. A. C. Forbes and Lieutenant R. G. Wilson-Dixon. Passengers injured were Messrs W. G. Miller, E. A. Beevor, J. M. Grant, C. G. Davies-Gilbert, and Barrington. Those of the crew injured were the captain, Mr A. S. Wilcockson; the first officer, Mr Long; the steward, Mr Hemming, and the wireless operator, Mr Birkenshaw. Mr "Wilcockson is an Imperial Airways veteran and piloted the first mail service from Croydon to India. The Imperial Airways yacht Imperia, aided by a Cretan tug, rescued the survivors, but rough weather delayed their transfer ashore in spite of assistance from H.M.S.
