AN EXPERIMENT
THE GROWING OF WHEAT. OFFER BY THE COMMITTEE. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) announced on Saturday that the Wheat Committee was prepared to arrange for the growing of 1000 acres of Juinbuck and/or Marquis wheat under special contract. The objects are twofold: (13 To induce growers to grow an additional 1000 acres this year. contracts are being made with individuals who undertake that the area contracted for is actually in addition to any area sown or intended to be sown in wheat this season. < (2) To enable an experiment to be conducted in the milling of straight Jumbuk and Marquis flour to take the place of imported. In a statement accompanying the notification of this decision the AVheat Committee says: “It is realised that millers are at present contracting for areas of the wheats mentioned, and it is not the intention of the AVheat Committee to interfere with this business in any way. The sole purpose of the special contracts is to encourage the production of wheat on land which would not otherwise be used for wheat this year. Premium for Quality. “The wheat grown under these special contracts, if of fair average quality, will be paid for at the prices fixed for Marquis and Jumbuk wheats for the 1937 harvest, but in addition the grower may be paid a premium according to blending or baking quality. As early as possible during the harvest of 1937 the AVheat Committee will fix a standard of quality for this special contract Jumbuk and Marquis. This standard will be a degree of quality quite apart from the f.o.q. description laid down in the regulations, and will bo determined upon the value of the wheat for blending and baking purposes. For all special contract Jumbuck and Marquis which excels the standards the committee will pay a premium above the usual Juinbuck and Marquis prices. The grower will thus bo assured of at least the Juniblick and Marquis fixed price with a good chance of a premium. “From.this experiment the committee hopes to secure information of great value to the wheat, flour, and bread industries.”
