BOXING.
FOORD DEFEATS PETERSEN. (Received This Day. 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 17. In the British and Empire heavyweight championship bout at Leicester, Ben Foo-rd (South Africa) defeated the holder, Jack Petersen, the referee stopping; the fight in the third round. Foord attacked strongly in the second round. He sent Petersen down for a count of seven in the third, round and felled him immediately afterward for three. Then he hit him almost as he pleased. Fool-d is the first Dominion boxer to win the British and Empire heavy titles.
LOUIS AND SHARKEY CONFIDENT (Receive-(l, This IDay. 1.25 pfm.) NEW YORK, August 17 . Joe Louis and Jack lSharkey are both confident at the end of their training for the heavy-weight contest to-morrow. No predictions are. being made. It is conceded that 'Sharkey looks good for his years, which are nearly 34. Louis has been training in almost complete secrecy and his entourage claims he has been taking his boxing lessons seriously and that he is far from sholyworn.
