METHVEN,
METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD
The Methven Methodist Ladies’ Guild held, its annual effort in aid of the new vestry building fund, in the Methven Town Hall. This took the form of a “High Tea” and games evening. A short programme of items was also given, and community singing was much enjoyed. A short play was given by members of the Guild and Bible Class. Mr Zeigler (Rokeby) contributed several vocal items and also was leader of the community singing, Mrs A. S'. Kennedy being accompaniste. A sales table conducted by Mrs C. Johns did good business, and altogether the effort was very successful. The Rev. W. A. Mills thanked all who had assisted. RAKAIA. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE, Miss C. Shannon presided at the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Women’s Institute night circle held in the Town Htfll. A demonstration on ruched cushions was given by Mrs Coatsworth. The monthly competition resulted:— Miss C. Shannon 1, Miss M. Rapley 2, Miss Nancy Pye 3. The visitors were Mesd.ames Coatsworth and McAnulty. Miss C. Shannon and Miss I>. Smith were the hostesses. > MAYFIELD. CIDDFELLOWS’ BALL. The Oddfellows’ Lodge held its annual ball in the Band Hall on Friday evening. The hall was prettily decorated with yellow and green streamers. Music was supplied by Cook’s Orchestra, with extras by Miss N. Whiting and Mrs S'himmin. Novelty dances were won by Mrs Johnstone and Mr Honeybone, and, Miss Ivy Simpson and partner, Mr L.'Lilley was M.C. LOWCLIFFE. HOCKEY CLUB SOCIAL. The Loweliffe Hockey Club held a very successful social in the schoolroom on Trursday evening, the proceeds of which are to help defray the expenses of the two local -players (Miss E. Anderson and Miss McKay) who have been chosen for the Ashburton representative team for the tournament to be held at Blenheim. Mrs Prouting (the former coach of the club) congratulated both players and wished them the best of luck. Mrs , D. Mcßae also spoke. The following items were given:— Vocal solos, Miss K. Johnston, Mr F. McGuinness and Mr J. Johnston; recitation, Mrs D. Mcßae; mouth organ solos, Miss M. Hansen and Master C. McKay; one-act play, entitled “The Final Rehearsal,” Mrs Mcßae, the Misses E. Anderson, F. Tait, E. Tait, and O. Ownsworth. The accompanists were Misses P. Wilson, E. Ford and Mr J. McGuinness. Games, dancing and competitions were enjoyed. The winners of the competitions were Miss P. Wilson, Miss M. Sclater, and Miss M. Hansen ; mystery parcel, Mr C. Gilliand. Music was supplied by Mr Chapman and Mr J. McGuinness. Mr H. Price was M.C. A dainty supper supplied by members of the club was handed round. WILLOWBY. YOUNG LADIES’ CIRCUIT GUILD. The Young Ladies’ Circuit Guild met at the Methodist Parsonage on Saturday afternoon. Arrangements were made in connection with the annual fancy-work stall to be held at the circuit garden party in October. A speciality this year will be a “Cookery Book.” Mrs Avery presided over the large gathering of young ladies. Afternoon tea was provided, at the conclusion of the meeting.
