BASKETBALL.

SOUTH CANTERBURY V. ASHBURTON. SENIOR GAME ON SATURDAY. The senior representative basketball match between Ashburton and - South Canterbury in the Domain on Saturday began with a determined attack by South Canterbury, resulting in a score inside the first minute of play. Ashburton’s attack in reply was well fended off and a strong South Canterbury attack resulted, which was saved in the nick of time by Mis A. Wells. From good combined play South Canterbury scored again, and in reply Ashburton’ initiated a good movement which just failed: two strugles round the goal area in Ashburton territory saw attempts just fail. Further Ashburton attempts were unsuccessful and South Canterbury again attacking strongly, seemed like scoring, but a good save by Miss Stalker relieved. Another good Ashburton attack failed and the ball was shortly again under South Canterbury goal. Miss Mahoney had the next chance of scoring for Ashburton but missed, and in quick succession Misses Browne and Strachan netted for South Canterbury, bringing the score to 4-0. Further dominance by South Canterbury resulted in two more scores, making six before Ashburton’s tally commenced. Miss Hewison then opened Ashburton’s score, to be followed almost immediately by a long and beautiful shot by Miss J. McMillan.—South Canterbury 6, Ashburton 2. South Canterbury indulged in some pretty play, but a good save turned the course of play and Miss Hewson netted again. Between the bell and the whistle Miss Browne goaled again for South Canterbury, making the score at halftime 7-3.

The second spell opened with an Ashburton attack that failed to add anything to the score, and a second, attack likewise failed. Pressure was kept up for a considerable time, but without success. A strong South Canterbury attack was foiled by Miss Wells once more, and Ashburton came strongly again. South Canterbury then had a spell of more than their share of the ball, and were handling prettily. Ashburton again lost some good chances, but persevered and Miss McMillan scored. Good Ashburton defence spoiled a renewed South Canterbury attack and a try just missed shortly afterwards. Miss McMillan scored next from a strong Ashburton movement, but Miss H. Smith replied for South Canterbury. Almost immediately afterwards Miss Mahoney netted a beautiful shot, and the score stood 9-6 in South Canterbury’s favour. Miss Strachan shortly added another to her total, and, the bell went with the visitors strongly attacking once more. The final score was: South Canterbury 10, Ashburton 6. Miss A. Mcßean was referee.
