WOMEN’S REPRESENTATIVE ASHBURTON BEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY The representative women’s hocirey match between Ashburton and South Canterbury in the Domain on Saturday was won easily by Ashburton by seven goals to nil. The match was fast and even, the teams being better macoh-sd than the scores indicate, but on the day’s play there was no doubt that Ashburton was the better team. The match was played, in excellent weather with the grounds in good order after the recent fine weather. j ' Ashburton. Goal: K. McKay. Backs: A. Loach and M. Watson. Halves: W. Lowe, D. In a curtain raiser to the representative women’s game, teams representing the Town and Country drew with two goals each. WIN FOR ASHBURTON MEN GAAIE WITH SOUTH CANTERBURY After a fast and exciting game, in which both teams were evenly matched the representative hockey match in the Domain on Saturday between Ashburton and South Canterbury representative teams was won by Ashburton by three goals to two. As the score indicates the game was close and resulted in a good exhibition of hockey. The teams were:—

Horrill, L. Snell, H. Pearce (captain), K. Oliver, H. Harper, I. Stevenson, W. Corbett, C. Corbett and K. Fowke. Ashburton won the bully carrying play to South Canterbury’s twentylie. Rodgers (South Canterbury) in a good solo effort returned play to Ashburton’s circle before centreing. The pressure was relieved by Harper (Ashburton) who took play to the other end of the field, where a good chance was missed by hard hitting. South Canterbury continued to attack resulting in Mitchell opening the score for the visitors. The game was taken to the visitors’ territory, where W. Corbett’s shot went over the bar. The South Canterbury forwards returned to the attack, playing being held in the Ashburton twenty-five for some time. The visiting forwards showed up to advantage at this stage. S. Hughes with a good solo effort took the ball to the Ashburton twenty-five before transferring to Alithcell. Tinker (Ashburton) saved a hot shot. Rodgers and Russell (South Canterbury) returned play to the Ashburton twenty-five where StoneWigg missed an easy goal. From a line out the South Canterbury forwards carried the ball to the circle, where Oliver relieved with a good hit. A few minutes after the start of the second spell Pearce (Ashburton) passed to W. After some up and down play Dobier (South Canterbury) passed to Mitchell, who sent to Hughes to shoot the visitors’ second goal. Ashburton ... 3 South Canterbury 2 Play was very fast, Ashburton having a slight advantage. The game ended with no further score. For Ashburton, Harper, Pearce and Kelly were prominent. Thei best South Canterbury players were Hughes, Mitchell and Rodgers. Both goalkeepers played sterling games. The referees were Messrs E. M. Gabites and C. Bishop. DINNER AFTER THE MATCHES The visiting men’s and women’s teams from South Canterbury were entertained in the Dorothy Tea Rooms after the match. Mr C. Bjsliop presided and the speakers were Mrs Seager (secretary of tlie South Canterbury Ladies’ Hockey Association), Mr A. C. Vincent (president of the Ashburton Men’s Sub-Association), Mr H. :Hi. Orr (captain of the South Canterbury Women’s team) and Messrs E. M. Gabites and Goodman (referees). AUCKLAND BEATS FIJI. , AUCKLAND, August 16. The Fijian women’s hockey team concluded its tour of the Dominion with a match against Auckland at Eden Park on Saturday, tlie home team winning easily by 8 goals to 0. It was a poor exhibition. Tlie visitors failed'to win a single game on the tour. They played 12 matches, losing 10 and drawing two. Auckland’s goals were scored by Misses Gawler (3), Lowe (2), Bell (2), and Cotter.
