The people of Gibraltar witnessed a thrilling episode when a rebel ’plane bombed a Spanish Government submarine which was patrolling the Straits and is believed to have sunk it. The Government claims that its ’planes brought down seven rebel ’planes.

The Spanish Government has issued a decree ordering mayors to take possession of all church and school buildings within five days. All British subjects in Spain have been provided with armlets bearing the national colours and the words: British subject.” Eighteen nationalities were represented among the 319 men and 466 women and children who have been evacuated from Barcelona and other Catalonian ports by ships of the British Navy in the last few days. The total includes 544 British, 141 Swiss, 40 Americans and 21 French.

A message from the British Consul at Madrid stated that trains which left Madrid for Alicante and Valencia on the night of July 26 arrived safely, and the supply trains from these ports had come through to the capital. Arrangements Yvere being pushed ahead for the evacuation by this route of those British subjects who desired to leave. The second destroyer flotilla left today to relieve the first destroyer flotilla the ships of which are at present in Basque ports.
