NEW MAGISTRATE.
MR RAYMOND FERNER. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 19. The appointment of Mr Raymond Ferner, Mayor of Mount Albert, and a member of the law firm of Melville, Ferner and Broun, as a stipendiary magistrate was announced by the Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) on Saturday. The Minister stated that it would probably be about a month before Mr Ferner could take up his new duties, and it was likely that his circuit would be on the West Coast of the South Island.
Mr Ferner was bom in Auckland in 1594, and received his education there. On returning from the war in 1919 he entered into partnership with Mr JM. Melville, and has been in practice with him ever since. He was elected to the Mount Albert Borough Council in 1931 and Mayor in 1933. Hie, thus succeeded Mr W. F. Stilwell, who had resigned when also appointed to the magistracy. Mr Ferner is a member of the Auckland Transport Board, and numerous other public bodies. He has shown much interest in child welfare and is a director of the Community Sunshine Association, which was founded, by his mother.
