WAIMATE, July 18,

The Waimate District Hunt Club’s annual steeplechase meeting was held in good conditions and before a fair attendance at Waimate to-day. There were many (present from South Canterbury and North Otago, and a special train from Christchurch brought several visitors. The tota.lisator takings amounted to £4248 10s, showing an increase of £396 10s over last year s figures of £3852. Further results:

Morven Handicap, of 55 sovs; one mile—l Golden Dart and 2 Mount Val (dead heat) 1, 6 The Surgeon 3. Won by two lengths, Time, 1.44 2-5. Hunters’ Plate Flat Handicap, of 30. sovs; one mile and a quarter —2 Gay Boa 1, 4 Hot Tea 2, 1 Tippling 3. Won by four lengths, thrid three lengths away. Time, 2.17 3-5. Waimate Hack Handicap, of 50 sovs; seven furlongs—l Queen Dorothy (Ellis) 1, 4 Dracula 2, 3 Poniard 3. Won by two lengths, a head between second and third. Time, 1.32 4-5.

The Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s annual race meeting was held to-day in fine weather, with the largest attendance for some years. SANTA CASA WINS AGAIN

At the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting at Caulfield to-day the Grand National Steeplechase winner, Santa Casa, won the Godfrey Watson Steeplechase by only three-quarters of a length, coming from an almost hopeless position a long way back. Chief results were:— Murrumbeema Handicap, of 600 sovs; one mile and. a half—Gay Friar 7.9 (N. Percival) 1, Jack Horner 8.12 2, 'Dusky Native 7.0 3. Won by threequarters of a length ; half a head between second and third. Time, 2.391. Leamington Hurdles, of 500 sovs; two miles one furlong and 65 yards— Cold Spring 10.4 (L. Healy) 1, Cape Race 8.4 2, Brilliant Son 10.9 3. Won by a neck; half a head between second and third. Time, 3.561. Godfrey Watson Steeplechase, of 500 sovs; about two miles and three furlongs—Santa Casa 10,5 (J. ltegan) 1, Christmas Gift 9.0 (F. Grierson) 2, Acteon 9.11 (J. McMahon) 3. There were 14 starters. Won by three-quar-ters of a length ; a length and a half between second and third. Time, 4.381. Kambrook Trial Handicap, of 500 sovs; one mile—Second Division: Perfect Idea 8.6 (L. Harrison) 1, Gay Brook 8.7 (H. Smith) 2, Othere 8.13 (C. O’Brien) 3. Won by a neck; a head between second and third. Time, 1.42. Araunali was second in the Malvena Welter Handicap, in which Pasha, Desert Chief, and Whernside were unplaced.

CANTERBURY PARK RACES.

LEADING RIDER INJURED. SYDNEY, July 18. At the Canterbury Park races to-day Tam o’ Shunter was unplaced in the Juvenile Handicap. Norman Conquest was unplaced in the Flying Welter Handicap. Collstar was unplaced in the Canterbury Handicap. The jockey, A. Knox, who this season has ridden 95 winners and three dead-heats, was kicked at the barrier in the first division, of the Maiden Handicap in his left leg was fractured

above the ankle. This will keep him out of the saddle for some weeks and will preclude his attaining the record for 100 winners far the season.

HURDLER KILLED AT CAULFIELD MELBOURNE, July 18. At the Qiulfield races to-day the well-known hurdler, Sixteen Annas, was killed, in the Leamington Hurdles by falling at the second to last jump, breaking his neck. His rider, J. Maher, escaped with a shaking.

THE KING’S TENTH SUCCESS. LONDON, July 18. The King had his tenth turf success since his accession when Fairmead won the Warren Handicap at Sandown Park. The victory caused great enthusiasm.
