FORTUNE GIVEN AWAY
DONATION OF £IOO,OOO. Anonymous donor in 1923 of £IOO,000 to the London Hospital, a man who died in March last and whose will has been published, left estate of only £7731. Ho was Mr Henry Ward, a bachelor, of Whitehall Court, S.W, Mr Ward was “father” of the London County Council when he retired in 1925, having been a member for 33 years. His will makes several minor bequests, and bequeaths the residue of his property to the London Hospital. Mr Ward stated that he had in his lifetime provided for those who had, any special claim on him. in 1923 mystery surrounded' the donor of the £100,009 gift, which was given in response to an appeal liy the late Lord Knutsford. Last January Mr Ward broke a thigh and was admitted to the hospital. In spite of every attention he became weaker, and died at the age of 87. Only then was his secret made known. It is understood that only two years after lie bad made his £IOO,OOO gift lie lost most of his fortune when shares in a company in which he was interested slumped.
