1931 WAGE LEVEL.
PROTEST AGAINST RESTORATION. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The Canterbury Employers’ Association has made representations to the Government on its announced intention to introduce legislation next week to restore the 1931 wages rates and other award conditions. The Association considers that there will he a most unfortunate disturbance of existing award conditions, and argues that the legislation already existing provides workers with ample facilities for obtaining wages rates and improvement in conditions, and that the proposed legislation on top of the amendments to the Factories and Shops and Offices Acts, the 40-hour week and the basic wage, will place industry in a condition' of chaos and thus jeopardise the employment of hundreds of workers and the very existence of businesses themselves. The Association contends that 1931 wages were sustained by 1931 price levels for exported produce, but that the present price levels will not support 1931 wages. The Association lias protested against increases in wages being made by Act of Parliament and also against making such legislation retrospective. The Prime Minister has replied that lie will place the representations before the Government.
