GAS EXPLOSION
WRECKING OF A GASOMETER. TWO MEN KILLED, TWO INJURED ONE SAVED BY COMPANION. (United Press Association—COpyrighf) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) LIO’NDON, June 18. Exploding with :1. Sheet of flame and. a vast plume of smoke the gasometer at Dewsbury, of a capacity of 1,250,000 cubic feet, blew off the cover. The explosion killed two cousins, Samuel and James Gledhill, whose bodies were discovered among the debris. ~ _ ‘
Herbert Hi‘nchcliffe and Joseph Rhodes were injured. ' Rhodes said that he and Samuel Gledhill were outside the meter-house and James Gledhill inside, The explo—sion blew Rhodes some distmnce.
Hinchcliffe, stooping to help Rhodes, was caught by the full blast of fire, a. shower of slates and stones, but saved his companion’s life. Doctors, nurses and, a fire brigade were quickly on the spot. The firemen prevented the ignition of the adjacent gasometer containing 750,000 cubic feet of gas. The explosion cut off the supply to a portion of .Dewsbury and damaged surrounding works The victims’ wives, who live opposite the works, saw the explosion.
