(From Our Own Correspondents.) , MOUNT SOMERS. SUCCESSFUL HARE DRIVE. A successful hare drive was held on Monday over the Lake Heron Station, in the Ashburton Gorge. Over 30 guns took part and upwards of 400 hares were shot. Proposed New Post Office. -'•'■ t In regard to the movement for the erection of a new post office at Mount Somers, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., has notified that he will visit the district within a few days to hear representations on this or any other district matters. He has also notified that the (Director of Post and Telegraphs advised that the Postmaster at Ashburton has been authorised to attend the meeting.
STAVELEY. THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The June meeting of the Staveley Women's Institute was held yesterday, Mrs G. L. Bufton presiding. It was decided to hold a dance next month. An invitation to the birthday party of the Mount Somers Institute was accepted. Mesdames J. M. Bruce and L. H. Bansgrove spoke on the importance of dental work among school children, and urged attendance at the forthcoming meeting on this matter at Ashburton. Mrs A. It. Andrews was in charge of a thrift stall. A game was won by Mrs L. G. McFarlaaie. The roll call was "Whistle, sing or say, or else penny pay." The competitions resulted :—Sugarbag article, Mrs S. Goldsmith 1, Mrs G. E.- Goldsmith 2, Mrs G. Ogg 3; sausage rolls, Miss E. Christiansen 1, Mrs 2 ; bloom, Miss Ada Smith 1 and 2, Mrs G. Durran 3 ; apple jelly, Mrs D. Durran 1 and 2, Mrs W. Norman 3. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Johnstone, N. Olliver, A. G. Langridge and Miss E. Johnstone.
Personal. Mr A. Robertson returned on Tuesday from a holiday in Wellington. The Church Army. The Church Army van is in the district. Sisters North and Meredith are conducting mission services and lectures at Staveley and Springburn. WILLOWBY. MISSIONARY AUXILIARY. The Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary's meeting was held at the Parsonage yesterday afternoon, when Mrs Avery presided over a large attendance. 'After devotional exercises, letters were read, from missionary sisters, telling of the work in home and overseas fields. A feature of the meeting was the address on Baptist Missions in India by Mrs Bryan, of Ashburton. . Mrs R. J. Chapman, Mrs Dakers, Miss Palmer, Mrs Roberts, Mrs F. Chapman, Misses M. M. Lill, Hazel Lill' and Ethelwynne Hayman sang "Awake, Awake to Love and Praise," as an octette. Mrs Grigg expressed the thanks of the meeting to the speakers. Afternoon tea was dispensed. Inter-Club Debate. An inter-club debate was held in the Church Hall last evening between the Eiffelton Educational Club and the Willowby Mutual Improvement Society. The chairman (Mr S. H. Lill) welcomed, the visitors on behalf of the Society and expressed the hope that the two societies would meet more frequently in debate.
Mr S. G. Macfarlane, of Asliburton, judged the speeches. The visitors took the affirmative and won the debate. Mr S. P. Taylor iled the argument for Eiffelton, assisted by Mr H. H. Hawkins and Mr R. Davison. The Willowby team comprised Mr R. J. Chapman (leader), the Rev. W. W. Avery and Mrs A. S. Hayman Votes of thanks to Mr Macfarlane and the chair concluded the meeting. Miss Valmai IDe La Mare was pianiste. Supper was provided by the ladies. At a subsequent meeting of the committee of the Willowby Society final arrangements were made for the combined ladies' and gentlemen's evening. Bible Class Services. A Bible Class movement day of prayer service was held in the Willowby Methodist Church. Members of the Younfi Women's and Young Men's Bible Classes combined for the service. Mr Hubert Hayman led the service. The Rev. W. -W. Avery delivered an address based on' "I Believe in God." Miss Marjory Lill was organist. At the morning service Mr Cliff Bishop (Ashburton) was the preacher, and he was assisted by Messrs K. Lill and Ernest Beauvais.' Divine worship in the evening was conducted by Mr Avery.
WINCHMORE. EXTENSION OF THE HALL. Workmen are busy extending the Winchmore Hall. The alteration will be a big improvement, making a much larger dancing floor. To mark the opening of the extensions a dance is being arranged. Women's Division. The monthly meeting of the Winchmore branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held, the president (Mrs F. A. Scott) presiding. Miss E. Anderson (Mcntalto) gave a demonstration oil making envelope purses from crepe paper, and Mrs E. Buchanan (Ashbnrton) gave a demons-
tration on felt work, both being most interesting. The competitions were won as follows -.—Biscuits: Mrs Withell 1, Mrs T. Dawson 2. Singlets: Mrs T. G. Scott 1, Mrs D. McKendry 2. Flowers: Miss D. King 1, Mrs J. Shearer 2. A games competition was won by Mrs T. Dawson. The hostesses were Mrs C. Taylor, Mrs H. M. Verrall, and Miss P. Veriall. LYNDHURST. THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst Women's Institute was held in the hall, the President (Mrs A. C. Gadd) presiding. Arrangements Avere made for the birthday party to be held on August 7. Mr W. Hunt (Ashburton) gave an interesting demonstration on the cutting of joints of mutton and beef, for which he was accorded a vote of thanks By Mrs'F. Scott. Misses Barclay and Rowe judged the competitions with the following results :—Ginger cake without eggs: Miss Jean Gilmour 1, Mrs P. Prebble 2, Miss Prebble 3. Quilting: Mrs Gadd 1, Miss Dorothy Drummond 2, Mrs F. Scott 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs W. Drummond, 1, Mrs Prebble 2, Miss Law 3 Jar of flowers or foliage: Mrs P. Prebble 1, Miss Prebble 2, Mrs Gadd 3. . The hostesses were Mesdames Jr. Prebble, J. H. McKendry, It. Rule, and Miss Prebble.
