FATAL ACCIDENT

ON THE MAIN SOUTH ROAD. THREE MOTOR-CARS INVOLVED. DEATH OF MISS M. E. LOWE. SECOND WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED. A long list of fatal accidents on the Main South road in the Ashburton County was added to last evening when Miss Mary Emily Lowe, aged 27 years, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. T. Lowe, "Clarendon," Hinds, was killed almost instantaneously as Hi result of a collision in which three motor-cars were involved. Miss Lowe was travelling in a car going toward Ashburton, and was with her parents, her sister, Mrs G, H. Farrell, of Hinds, who was seriously injured, and her bi-otker, Mr T. P. Lowe, who was driving. At Winslow they were proceeding fairly close behind another car, driven by Mr W. H. Simmons, of Lowcliffe, who was also coming toward town. A third car, driven by Mr DeLacy Cameron, of Timaru, a commercial traveller, was going south. It came into collision with Mr Simmons' car; hut the impact was comparatively slight. Mi- Cameron's car then swung out to the right and struck the rightrhand side of Mr Lowe's car, doing extensive damage, most of the side being stripped off. The damaged! vehicle then swung off the road and struck the fence. Miss Lowe was seated behind the driver and she felt the full force of the impact between the two cars. She apparently died within a few moments' of being struck. Mrs Farrell, who was sitting next to Miss . Lowe, sustained a fracture of the skull and a broken arm, and she was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital in a serious condition. The hospital authorities reported this morning that her condition was satisfactory. Mr Cameron's car struck Mr Lowe's car practically head on. Both axles of the latter were displaced, and the .wheels were stripped off. Mr T. P. Lowe sustained a split lip, and his father and mother were slightly injured, while the three of them suffered very severely from shock. The accident occurred about 7.40 o'clock. An inquest was opened this afternoon before the District Coroner (Mr E. C. Bathurst) and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken.

HOCKEY PLAYERS' SYMPATHY. Miss Lowe was a prominent hockey player, being secretary of the Hinds Club and a former Ashburton County representative. . \. As a mark of respect to her memory and of sympathy with her relatives, the Ashburton County Women's Hockey Association to-day decided to postpone all its fixtures arranged for next Saturday.
