ONE-DAY SHOW

RETENTION IN ASHBURTON. DECISION OF THE COMMITTEE. TWO-DAY MOTION REJECTED. i EXPORT LAMB COMPETITION. The chief item on the agenda of the meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association general committee this afternoon was considera—tion of Colonel J. Findlay’s notice of motion that in future the shows be held on two days instead of one. IVIr R. J . Martin (vice—president) presided in the absence of the president (Mr A. N. Grigg), end there was a large at—trendance.

Congratulations were extended to Mr F. Frampton on his election as chairman of. the Ashburton County ,Council.

Advice was received to the effect that his Excellency the Governor—General (Viscount Galway) was unable to give a definite reply to the Association’s invitation that he should attend the show in November. The Association was asked to renew the invitation iearly in October. ' At the request of the Rakaia iPloughing Match Committee for a ldonation toward its funds, it was agreed to make a grant of two guineas. A circular letter was received from the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board regarding the: recently decided lamb competition at Smithfield‘. The letter gave details of the judges’ remarks. The Mid-Canterbury exhibits, it was stated, were well shaped, but some few were inclined to carry too much fat on the loins. The remarks of the judges regarding the Mid—Canterbury“ winning exhibits (already puhlish'ed) were also forwarded.

It was decided to thank the Board for its detailed a‘eports and to suggest that in future weights of all exhibits, and the breeding, should be included. It was decided, also, to congratulate Messrs \V. M. Turner (Mayfield) and A. C. Cameron (I’enda-rves) on gaining second and third places, respectively, in the Mid-Canterbury section of the competition.

Mr A. N. Grigg was appointed to represent the Association at the next annual meeting of the Clydesdale Horse Society, the vicewpreside‘nt to attend if Mr 'Grigg is unable: to act. It was decided that the president and vice-,president confer with the officers of the Farmers’ Union in regard to the selection of delegates to the Meat Board electoral committee. Miss I. Rutherford notified that she would donate £lO to the prize fund for the best qualified hunter (not jumper) for the jubilee show in November, the points to be allotted 50 per cent. for type and soundness and 50 per cent. for jumping. dMiss Rutherford was heartily thank—e .

Speaking to his (notice. of motion, Colonel Findlay said that while one—day shows had been a. success in the past, there was no doubt that there were many officials who were so busy during the day that they could not see any other part of the show. There was not time to: judge all the classes they would like. His motion related to the next Show only. It would be the Jubilee Show and should he made a big thing. There should be it licensed booth, which would bring in about £SO and make everybody very much more cheerful. He would not move that, however.

The motion was seconded by Mr S. P. Taylor. The secretary read letters from ex—hibitors, nine favouring one day and three favouring two days. Mess-rs H. Morris and D. G. \Vright thought it would not— be: a wise step to go back to a two—day Show. Mr ‘Vrigh‘b said} the entries would be fewer, especL ally in View of the fact that the Royal Show would be held the following week.

‘ Mr S. Andrew agreed with these speakers, and said the public would prefer one good day, instead of two days. V' Mr H. C. B. Withel‘l said he was afraid that the sheep» men would not attend a two-day show. Mr J. H. Grigg said the Association shbuld make every effort to assure the success of the jubilee Show, but there were many arguments against the hold—ing of' a two-day show. The question of accommodation for stock over night was the big difficulty. Sheep and light h})frse entries would be sure to fall 0 . m Mr J. C. Guinness said that it would be better to increase the prize money than to extend the period of the Show.

In. reply to M 1" H C. Bartom, the secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) said that the extra. cost would, be from £6O to £7O for :1. two-day show. The gate takings on the first day when a twoday Show was last hold did, not pay the gatekeepers’ wages. The amount was £l3.

Colonel Findlay said he thought he was wasting his breath in replying. He thought the exhibitors would still support the show if it was extended a day. There were only two South Island shows that were: superior to the Ash{burton Sh-OM'. “You chaps have no pluck at all,” he said. “You won’t take a. risk, and we are going back on our reserve every year, anyway.”

The president said there- were. many events that could he conducted that could not he held in the limit of one day. Colonel Findlay suggested that a committee might go intov the question. The motion. was lost, ton voting; for it and about twice that number votimg against it.

Two new members, one a life member, were elected.
