Caygill being the only candidate nominated this morning tor the vacancy on the Ashburton Borough Council caused by the. resignation of Mr 'l‘. Quill, has been declared elected. b‘now halls—A slight fall of snow took place in Ashburton to-day. In the hills district the ground was covered with snow. ' Gas in Court.—The contractor com—pleted the gas fittings and warming apparatus _in the Ashburton Courthouse last evening. Hounds at G-asworks.——The Ashbur—ton hounds met at. the gasworks yesterday afternoon. There was a full muster of followers, but the scent was poor and the weather disagreeable. As a conseqeunce the sport was not as good as usual. Tarawera Eruption—The following telegrams have been received from Tauranga by the secretary of the Post Office—Loud reports and heavy earthquakes began here and continued until 5 a.nl.' 'l’auxranga is in darkness and thick clouds of sulphurous matter, gypsum, etc. , in the air. Mount Tarawera Rotomahana, it is reported, has broken out and: eruptions are going on continu—ously. The Postmaster at Rotorua telegraphsz—All the people here fled in nightclothes. Have sent my family away and remain at my post. Cannot say how long I can do this. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. The headma-tser’s report showed that the average attendance had been :-—Main school, roll number, 401‘, average attendance 372, Allenton, fichool, roll number '97 , average attendance 94. Goods Clerk Transferred—Mr P. Bradley, chief- goods clerl; at the Ashburton Railway Station, has been transferred to Christchurch. His place is being taken by Mr S. Hill. Success at Poultry Shown—Mr E. 0. Baker, of Ashburton, has received advice that he has won the championship and first and second prizes forzßlack Orpington cockerels at the Maniototo Poultry Show, at Naseby. He also secured first prize for a Black Orping ton Cock. The championship has been won twice in succession by Mr Baker, and this year he will also receive a special prize of £5 53. ‘ . Shooting Match—The following are thehighest scores in the last miniature rifle match fired by the Ashburton Guards :———Colour Sergeant Henderson 66, Corporal XV. Bradshaw 65, Captaln W.. Tucker 64., Sergeant Stephens 61, Corporal A. Reid 61. '
