SPECIAL SERVICES

THE ASHBURTON CHURCHES. ST- ANDREW’S ANNIVERSARY^ Special services were held in several Ashburton churches yesterday. Services in connection with 02nd anniversary of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church were conducted by the Rev. J. M. McKenzie, of Oamaru, and there were large congregations at both the morning and evening services. In the morning the lesson was read from the first chapter of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossians, and Mr McKenzie based the remarks on his sermon in the text, “And they went everyone straight forward, whither the spirit was to go they went, and they turned not when they went.” “Follow the leader” was the subject of an interesting and appropriate address to the children.

In the morning the choir sang the anthem, “Blessed be the God and Father” (Wesley), and in the evening “Behold, the Day is Come” (AVoodwaitl) was given. Mr H. S. Gardner (tenor) was the soloist. Miss L. AVatt was the organist.

The annual golden offering for the liquidation of the debt on St. Andrew s Hall was made.

The anniversary celebrations will conclude this evening with a congregational social in the hall.

CHURCH ARMY AT ST. STEPHEN’S.

The second birthday of the Church Army van mission in Canterbury was suitably celebrated at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church during the week-end. The van was brought from Hampstead, where- the sisters are conducting a mission, on Saturday afternoon, and was inspected by several persons in the church grounds. About 50 persons attended the tea meeting held in the Parish Hall, where the Veil. Archdeacoii A. J. Petrie presided, A pleasant time was spent in games after the tea.

The addresses at the morning md evening services yesterday wore given by Sister F. Childs and Sister Iv. North respectively. A service was held round the van in the afternoon.

THE SALVATION ARMY. Bible Sunday was conducted at the Ashburton Salvation Army Citadel yesterday. The principal service for the occasion was in the afternoon, when the Rev. L. P. Bryan was the speaker. An essay competition on the subject of the “Holy Bible” was won as follows: Senior: James Shaw 1, Audrey foster 2. Junior: Ernie Frew 1, Edward Fearn 2. Members of the Loyal Orange Lodge attended the service at the Citadel in the evening, where the address was given by Captain N. E. Bicknell. Thirty young people of the Sail -i----tion Army attended the army counci's conducted by Commissioner Adams at Christchurch during the week-end.

BAPTIST CHURCH SERVICE. A memorial service for Mrs Amoy Long was held in the Ashburton Baptist Church, a large congregation attending. The Rev. L. P. Brigan, who conducted the service, took his text from Revelation, chapter 14, verse 13, “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” He referred to Mrs Long’s sterling Christian character, her regular attendance at church, and her love of the House and Word of God. In particular he mentioned the support she had given to the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union.

The choir gave an appropriate message, singing the anthem “Deal Spirit.” Hymns sung included Mrs Long’s favourite, “O love that will not let me og.”

TINWALD METHODIST CHURCH. The anniversary of the Tiuwald Methodist Sunday School was marked by special services yesterday. Tho preacner in tho morning was Mr S. G. Macfarlane, in the afternoon Mrs \V. Avery, and in the evening the Rev. W. Avery. Special singing by Sunday Scliool children was a feature of each service.
