HOTEL “CON” MEN.
WAR OF EXTERMINATION. British hotel proprietors have decided to take special measures to defeat the hotel confidence tricksters. They have become seriously alarmed at the, recent increase in this type of fraud, which is costing them thousands of pounds every week. “Prosperity in Britain seems to have attracted shoals of these crooks from the United States and from the Continent,” the proprietor of one of the largest London hotels informed the “Sunday Chronicle” recently. “Quite recently one of these men not only lived and boarded free at the hotel, but used the name of the hotel when ordering large quantities of goods 011 credit from several big London stores. “It was only when lie failed to return and his ‘luggage’ was opened that the fraud was discovered. “The trunk he had loft behind when lie made, his getaway contained nothing but second-hand books and old newspapers.” Hotel-owners are to combine to Compile a comprehensive “black list” of known crooks; Widen the scope of the hotel detective ; Call for a general tightening-up m the rules regarding the payment of bills and the granting of credit.
