DECISIONS OF THE BOARD.

FARM WORK IN APRIL, EXTRA TEACHER TO REMAIN. The Ashburton High School Board of Governors met this morning, ''when there were present —Dr. G. I. Miller (chairman), Messrs M. Bruce, H. R. C. McElrea, El. H. Orr, F. Frampton, J. Brown, W. T. Lill, and W. H. Woods. The headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroit) reported as follows “May Holidays.—The school will break up on Friday, May 8, and will resume on Tuesday, May 26. “Anzac Day.—The Anzac service was held on April 24 in the School Assembly room. The speaker was the Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie. The service was controlled by the Old Pupils’ Association Tho firing party for the public parades was supplied by the school.

“Gala. —This was held last Saturday. So far, no definite results can he obtained. but these should be very satisrfactory. Our thanks are due to all those who helped in supplying the necessary articles for the stalls, and also to the helpers and to the Ashburton Silver Band.

“Farm Report for April.—Mr McGregor supplies the following report: “Forty-one lambs have been sent to Fairfield freezing works. Seven are left. The wheat threshed during the month was that which had been stacked before the heavy rains damaged some of the grain. The yield of the Cross 7 wheat was 50J bushels per acre, and the sample weighed 621bs per bushel. Next year we hope to have a greater area, in Cross 7, as it seems to suit our class of land. “On April 27, the second-year boys paid a visit to Mr H. C. B. Withell’s farm at Ealing, and were shown the well-known Ryeland stud flock. “Attached is the farm budget for 1936-37, and in view of the position disclosed, it is suggested that the purchase of a pood draught horse he authorised. The strength of the team is at present quite unsatisfactory, and the “only way of improving the position is for the Board to purchase ail additional’ horse of a suitable type which would, of course, be a valuable asset. “One section of tho agricultural course deals with internal combustion engines, and Messrs Smallbone Bros., Ltd., have donated a motor-car engine for demonstration purposes.” Farm estimates for 1936-37 :

“Receipts—Wheat £290, wool £45, lamb £l4O, hay £lO, pigs £l2, rape £6, total £503. Expenditure—V r ages, teamster £156, casual £65, threshing £35, chaff-cutting etc £9 ss, cartages, etc £B, manures, etc. £45, car allowance £39, repairs, truck £l2, others £2O, fencing £2O, valance £93 15s, total £503.

Mr Withell was thanked for the demonstrations at his farm.

The Department of Education wrote approving of the part-time employment of Mr C. O.Malley as instructor in drawing.

The Department also wrote approving of the retention of the additional D. teacher till the roll number reaches 300.

The financial statement for the last year showed that the period opened with a credit of £llO 4s lOd, and closed with a credit of £2O 15s sd.
