Gifts to Hospital—The Master of the Hospital desires to acknowledge Avith thaniis the receipt of papers Irom Mr T. F. Farley, and of old linen from Mrs Rutherford, Mrs U. Digby and Mrs Pritchard.
Heavy Rain —A very heavy fall of rain, which seems to have been general in all parts of Canterbury and Otago, was experienced in Ashburton on Thursday. In the toAvn, some of the side channels Avere incapable of carrying off the large body of water, and some of the streets Avere in consequence flooded. In the country a great deal of low-lying land Avas covered with Avater. No damage is reported. The afternoon and evening trains Avere someAvhat delayed by the boisterous Aveather and the slippery condition of the rails.
Application for License—Mr J. W. McCrae notifies his intention of making application at the next licensing meeting for a publican’s license for the Central Hotel.

Boxing Revived in Ashburton. —The Ashburton Boxing Association.' Avas resuscitated at a meeting held on Tuesday evening, Avhen there were present Messrs E. W. Cardale (in the chair), H. H. Sharplin, P. Cookson, J. V. de Beer, HI 11. C. McElrea, V. P. Boot, J. T. McDonald, and H. E. Curtis (secretary). It Avas decided to hold a carnival in'the near future.
Conscription in Ashburton. — The youths of the Ashburton Defence District are not enrolling in any great numbers under the neAv defence regulations. A “Guardian” reporter in conversation Avith Sergeant-Major Williams this afternoon, learned that up till to-day only 391 enrolment forms had been filled in and received. The districts 'have been divided in such a Avay as to put them, as near as possible, on an equal population basis. The number of persons coming Avithin the compulsory clauses of the Act in the Ashburton District Avas estimated to be from 1300 to 1500. Tailored Street Fire.—Ail alarm of fire Avas given shortly after a quarter past ten last evening, and the Fire Brigade lost no time in proceeding to the scene of the outbreak, a gairly old seven-roomed house in Tancred Street east (almost directly behind the Brigade Station), owned by Air Frank H. Choate, senior. The flames had a good held when the bell Avas rung, and though the men ran the curricle engine round quickly, and had water on very smartly, damage to a large extent Avas done, and the water only added to the general destruction.
