THE WEATHER.

IMPROVEMENT AFTER STORM FIRST HEAVY FROST OF YEAR, The violent southerly storm on Saturday died away on Sunday, and the weather in Ashburton was fine again today. A light north-easterly wind was blowing, with a mild temperature and a slightly overcast sky. Eight and a half degrees frost, the heaviest so far this year, were recorded at the Domain weather station on Saturday night. There was a further frost of 2.3 degrees to-day. Rainfall after 9 o’clock on Saturday amounted to 7 points, the total fall being 17 points. The maximum temperature yesterday was 54 degrees, compared with, 47 degrees on Saturday. The inside minimum last night was 35.2 degrees and on 'Saturday night 28.2 degrees. Barometric pressure at 9 o’clock this morning was 29.62 inches, a rise from 29.56 inches yesterday morning.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather :

General inference: An anti-cyclone of moderate intensity is passing to the north, but a, new series of westerly depressions is advancing across the south Tasman Sea The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oarnaru is as follows: —

Moderate to strong and increasing north-westerly wind prevailing. Weather fair to fine and milder. A heavy but decreasing southerly swell, otherwise seas moderate
