Winning about £3OO in wagers by his feat, John Alastair Timpson, a secondyear undergraduate, trotted on blistered feet to the front gate of Trinity College, Cambridge, shook hands with the head porter in fulfilment of a bet that he would walk the 106 miles from Cambridge to St. Paul’s, London, and back in 24 hours. He won with a margin of 58 minutes.
