TARIFF AND COSTS.

THE FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY. f (Per Press Association.) • CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. Aftr discussing the Government’s plans, for the introduction of a 40-hour week with increased pay for workers, the Dominion 'Footwear Manufacturers’ Association, carried the following resolution: “That this general meeting of the Footwear Manufacturers’ Association raises no objection whatever to the policy of the Labour Government in raising the standard of living of the workers engaged in the industry; it is pointed out, nevertheless, that any measure which results in increasing the costs of production will only reduce the sales of New Zealand footwear and, thus, will reduce the amount of employment in the industry unless the increase of costs in New Zealand is accompanied simultaneously by a corresponding adjustment of the tariff.”
