SAILOR’S ESCAPADE.
JUMPED OVERBOARD FROM MAKURA. (United Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. “When the Makura was proceeding down the harbour last evening on the start of her voyage to New Zealand, a seaman named W. Slattery jumped overboard. His action caused a sensation among the passengers and crew. The Makura stopped and lowered a lifeboat in command of tlie second officer, but a motor launch, which was in the vicinity, rescued Slattery; who appeared demented. rfe struggled violently and again leapt into the water, but was fished out a second time and secured with a rope to the launch.
Meanwhile the Makura’s boat arrived and took the struggling man back to the vessel, where he was placed in charge of the ship’s doctor.
