CENSURE DEFEATED.
AUSTRALIAN BANKING POLICY. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received this day, 1.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The censure motion was discussed to-day in the House of Representatives and was defeated almost on a party division. Mr J. Curtin (Leader of the Opposition) yesterday launched the motion complaining of the Government’s failure to safeguard Australia’s oversea funds by checking the increasing flow of unnecessary imports, thus leaving it to the Commonwealth Bank Board to direct the national monetary policy in a manner gravely affecting economic conditions in Australia. Though the division was mainly on party lines, two New South Wales Government supporters, Sir Frederick Stewart and Mr J. Larson were, however, critical of the Government’s action in exercising no control over the Commonwealth Bank Board’s action in issuing Treasury hills to the public, which they said had created an atmosphere of mystery about the hanking policy. It 1 had caused anxiety in the minds of the investing and business public, and the Bank Board itself had done nothing to allay that anxiety or explain its motive.
