FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 9, 1886). Horse Drowned.—On, Friday last a horse attached to a water cart was drowned in the Rakaia River, about was sept from a neighbouring farm to fill the cart with water, and driving into a deep hole the cart upset, drowning the Horse. The driver escaped. Eire in Wheat.—Five stacks of wheat the property of Mr P. Drummond, of Rakaia, were destroyed by fire last Saturday night. The stacks were covered by* insurance in the New Zealand office, but, as Mr Drummond is absent from home the amount is not known. The cause of the fire is a mystery. <- Attempt to Destroy Property.—Some maliciously disposed person or persons have been guilty of a dastardly attempt to destroy the property of Mr J. W. Oliver by placing pieces of iron and boulders in stacks and sheaves which had to be passed through his threshing machine. Separate rewards of £l.O each are offered for such information as may lead to the conviction-of the offender or offenders in each instance. Church Parade.—A church parade of the Ashburton Rifles was held on. Sunday. The corps mustered in front of the Post Office, and, headed by the band, proceeded to the Presbyterian Church, where the service was conducted by the Rev. A. M. Beattie. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 9, 1911). Dairying at Mount Hutt.—Mr Hamish McLean, of Mount Hutt, has purchased a line of 70 head of heifers in the Taieri district,. They will, form part of a good milking herd he is establishing at Mount Hutt. ' It is reported that Air Donald McLean, of Mount Hutt, expects to be milking 500 cows at the beginning of next season. He is so far sitisfied with results this season at his private creamery that he is about to build and equip a, butter factory. A great deal of the Mount Hutt country i 9 admirably adapted for dairying purposes. Appointments in Schools. —The following appointments of local importance were made at a meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board on Wednesday: Miss M. Baker was appointed mistress of the. Riverside school, and Miss R. Bonnington assistant mistress at Hampstead. .Miss McNally having been recommended by the Balcairn and Lyndhurst committees, it was agreed to ask her what position she preferred. Bliss Blargaret E. White was appointed to Rakaia South. The following resignations were accepted: Rolceby, Miss Doherty, mistress; Tinwald, Bliss R. Bonnington, mistress. Messrs W. 081. Collins and J. Tucker were appointed, the Board’s representatives on the Ashburton Technical Classes Association.
