AXEMAN WOUNDS LEG AT SPORTS. Owing to his axe slipping while he was taking part in a w'ood-chopping event at the Mount Somers Gymkhana on Saturday, Mr John Albert Bates, aged 24, of Mayfield, received an extensive woupd on his right ankle. He was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital, where his condition is reported to be satisfactory. CYCLIST FATALLY INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Suffering severe injuries to his head in a collision between a motor-cycle be was riding and a taxi in Queen Street, Sydenham, yesterday morning, Mr Arthur Clegg, a married man, of 180 Sawyers Arms Road, died .in the Public Hospital last night'.
