SMALLER CRUISERS.
NAVAL CONFERENCE DECISION. BATTLESHIPS TO REMAIN. (United Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, February 23. The American refusal to reduce battleships below 35,000 tons assures the retention by the Four Power conference of the existing limit, and dissipates the hope of substantial reductions in the size and cost of battleships. The naval correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” attributes the decision solely to technical reasons. Nevertheless, the conference is believed to have agreed to cruisers of a maximum of 8000 tons instead of 10,0(10, which may mean a saving of £300,000 on each new British heavy cruiser, the armament of which will also be restricted to six-ineli guns. The British Admiralty has always maintained that 10,000 tons was excessive for cruisers.
