LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 18, 1886). Mr W|alk#Fs Address.—-Mr W. O. Walker, M.H.R., for Ashburton, addressed his constituents at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. The attendance was small at the commencement of the address, hut increased as the evening wore on. Mr R. Friedlander (Mayor <jf Ashburton) occupied the chair. I'ne chairman briefly introduced Mr Walker, stating that that gentleman would now afford them information on the events of the last session of Parliament before his leaving for Wellington to take part in the forthcoming one. He hardly needed to ask them to give Mr Walker a fair and impartial hearing; that, he was sure, they would all of them do. Mr Walker, who was received with applause, said he was sorry there were so few electors present that evening, because it was a matter of satifacticn to a representative when he rendered an account of his stewardship, to meet as many of his constituents as possible. Methven School Committee., —A special meeting of the committee took place on Saturday evening. Present — Messrs G. Shanii (chairman), J. Hibbs, D. Quinn, N. Duff, J. Gilchrist, R-. Patton and J. C. McWilliam. The headmaster (Mr N. N. Seay) reported that the number on the roll last month was: Boys 41; girls 37 ; total 78. Average attendance—Boys, .29.6; girls, 27.5; total 57.1. Highest attendance, 63. At the request of 'the master, who has been appointed to the Kowhai Pass School ,it was resolved that he lie relieved of his duties on Tuesday, February 16. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Fe.b. 18, 1911). Teachers’ Examinations. —The following are the successful Ashburton candidates in the teachers’ certificate examinations:—Class C —Misses E. R. Choate, A. R. Macßae, K. Minnis, Florence Smith and L. Thwaites. Class D—Miss Hayes, Manion, J. Turner, and R. Foster. Band Contest. —The band contest at Palmerston North was continued this evening in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance of the public, and the playing of the various bands was keenly criticised. The Ashburton Band put up a good, clean performance, hut apparently the interpretation did not please the judge, the band being placed sixth. The aggregate points in the test selection place the bands as follows: —Wellington Tramways 1, Gisborne 2, Ashburton Temperance 3. Thefts of Grain,—The thefts of bags of threshed grain appears to he commencing, again this season. A Waterton farmer in. town to-day reports having lost three hags qf wheat in this way during the last week, and a similar theft is reported by an Eiffelton resident. " Technical Chairman. —At last evening’s meeting of the Technical Classes Association, the Mayor (Mr H.
