“SILVER TREE.”
METHODIST MISSIONARY UNION. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Tho annual “Silver Tree” effort, in connection wit-li Ashburton Blanch o the Methodist Women’s Auxiliary, was held in Baring Square Hall yesterday afternoon, and proved very successful. The hall was decorated, a large tree in tho centre of the platform being hung with bags of every colour and shade. The cake and miscellaneous-stalls, m charge of the members of the auxiliaiy, wero laden with attractive articles, which met with a ready sale. Tho president (Sister Mildred) presided over a good attendance, and opened proceedings with the singing of “From Greenland’s Icy Mountains,’ followed by prayer by the Rev. G. B. Hinton. Mr H. Money (secretary of the local branch of the Foreign Mission Society), addressed those present, and declared tbe proceedings open. Good business was done, and a sumptuous afternoon tea was handed round. A very enjoyable programme was given as follows: —Vocal solos, Misses M. and H. L. B. Brown, IT. Sawle, and Mrs G. Holmes; recitations, Miss C. Hopkins; pianoforte solo, Miss R. Porter; guitar solo, Mr G. A. Holmes. Misses B. Brown and R. Porter, and Mrs T. Pethick were accompanists. Quotations enclosed' in the “bags” were read, and the president announced that-tho takings for the afternoon amounted to £l6, with a few small sums yet to come in. Hearty votes of thanks worn accorded the speakers and performers, and all who had contributed to the success of the afternoon.
