COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) RUAPUNA. There was a fair attendance at the February, meeting of the Ruapuna branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The president (Mrs J. Moore) presided. Members stood in silence in respect of King George. The winner of the competition for the box ottoman would, it was reported, be decided on the night of the fourth birthday party. Final arrangements wore made for’the birthday party on March 4. A flower show will he held in the afternoon and a dance in the evening. The baby show, which will he hold during the afternoon, will he supervised by Mesdames F. Tasker and ,T. Early, and a miniature eup will lie awarded to the person who gains most points in the show. The results of the competitions were as fallow : —Raspberry jam : Mrs J. I). King 1, Mrs J. Moore 2, Mrs W. J. Allan 3. Apricot jam: Airs J. Moore 1, Mrs W. J. Allan 2. Chocolate cake: Miss L, Boyd 1. Knitted hot water-bottle cover: Miss L. Boyd 1. Bloom: Mrs J. D. King 1, Mrs J. Moore 2, Mrs R. W. Holland 3. Vegetable: Mrs A. Glassev 1. A vote of thanks was passed to Airs J. Early, who judged the competitions. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Taylor adn R. AY. Holland. RAKAIA. Airs Boag presided at the monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. The programmes for all meetings to be held during the next six months were drawn up. Addresses were given by Airs Ashford, Mrs Boag and: Aliss T. Clark. Misses AI. and S. Oakley wore appointed organists for all meetings. The hostesses were Alesdames Pye and C. Shannon. At a meeting of the Ladies’ Guild, held later, the following stall-holders were appointed for the Japanese Fair, to he hold on Alareh 27: —Dips, Aliss AI. Cro^'ie: sweets, Alisses M. Oakley and AI. Lee; cakes, Airs Lee and Aliss T. Clark; works, Airs Breach and Miss Stevenson ; fancy goods, Alesdames Nicol, Pye and Aliss Burrows; Jl)d stall, Alisses AI. Hondrv and H. Shannon; produce, Mrs Hamilton and Aliss Burrows; refreshments, Alesdames C. Liddington, Gardiner, C. Shannon, E. Oakley, Alisses AI. E. Oakley and Boyd. SPRINGBURN. The Springburn School re-opened with a roll number of 47, a decrease of two from last year. Owing to the illness of AL L. H. Bansgrove, the recently-appointed master, Aliss AI. Goldstone is relieving. MOUNT SCMERS, Those present at the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers School Committee were Alessrs L. King, AY. R. Glasson, G. AJ. Doak and J. T. Bull. It was reported that the school had re-opened under the newly-appointed headmistress (Aliss J. Stevenson). A roll of 30 hoys and 27 girls was reported. New pupils admitted were two five-year-olds, one six-year, and two over six. The roll at the close of last year was 56. It was decided to held a. combined railway excursion with the Springburn School to Timaru after the completion of harvest, provided suitable arrangements can be made. In the absence of the president (Air A. N. Grigg), Air S. AI. Chaffcy presided over a meeting of the gala and gymkhana committee, when arrangements were furthered for the gala to be held on Air S. Johnstone’s property on Saturday., February 22. Air L. H. Ruddock was appointed treasurer. A financial statement was received from the Hakatere shed hands dance committee, also the gala sub-committee dance. It was reported that a number of entries had been promised for the tug-of-war contest on Tuesday, February 25. The donation of a number of trophies for the sports events was rope ited. The weather is still unsettled, nearly 3 inches of rain being recorded during the past week. Harvesting has been brought to a complete standstill, and there is still a little shearing unfinished. The storm last week laid considerable portions of he unreaped crops.
