TOBACCO CROPS.

DAMAGE IN NELSON DISTRICT. HEAVY SNOW AND HAIL. (Special to the “Guardian.”) NELSON, February 8. Nelson experienced a cold snap yesterday when the temperature dropped to .'IB.B degrees. There was a heavy fall of snow in the Lake Roto-Iti district and the Mount Arthur Range west of Tasman Bay, is covered with snow. The conditions resemble midwinter. Yesterday afternoon hailstorms, lasting for over an hour, swept Riwaka and the Motueka River district, causing extensive damage to the hops and apple crops. The tobacco, which is ready for harvesting, suffered severely. The full extent of the damage cannot be ascertained, but one of the largest growers state that it will run into thousands of pounds. .
