(From Our Own Correspondents.) WAKANUI Mrs D. Buttevick presided over a fair attendance at the February meeting of the Wakanui Women’s Institute., Arrangements were made for the annau meeting to be held next month. The competition winners were: Bloom, Mrs Hyland 1, Mrs Hvdes 2, Mrs Watson 3. Tinfoil picture, Mesdames Watson and Hyland (equal) 1, Miss Eden 3. Year’s programme (judged by Mrs F. Curtis), Mrs Watson 1, Mrs Hyland 2. Mesdames West and Watson were tlie hostesses. LOWGLIFFE. The Lowcliffe and Hinds Sunday Schools combined in bolding their annual picnic at Longbeach on Saturday afternoon when there was a large gathering of parents, teachers and friends. The children spent a happy time in games and races, etc. A ramble through the beautiful Longbeach gardens was much enjoyed bvi all. The occasion was taken to bid farewell to Mr E. Hamilton, who is leaving the district, and to welcome the Rev. E. Walsli. Mr J. Marshall, on behalf of the members of the Presbyterian Church, presented Mr Hamilton with a roll of notes. Mr McLachlan (Tinwald) spoke of the good work and interest Mr Hamilton had taken in the Church and the people. MARONAN. Tlie February meeting of tlie Afaronan Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Graham Scales, who presided. The president referred to the death'of King George V., and requested the members to stand in silence. An invitation was received from the Ealing Women’s Institute to a garden party and flower show on February 27 in Mrs Bailey Withell’s garden, and members were asked to compete in the various classes which are open to members of the Institute forming tlie group. The secretary was asked to post the amount subscribed by members toward the expenses of a delegate to the Pan-Pacific Conference in Washington, U.S.A. Mrs Hamber gave an account of the successful historical pageant held in the Ashburton Domain in December by the Institutes of South and Mid-Canterbury Federations. Members were reminded of the annual meeting on March o, and that nominations for the committee close on February 27. It was reported that Miss E. .J. Watt of the Ashburton Public Hospital bad promised to give a talk on First Aid in case of accident. Mrs J. Whiting gave ademonstration on refooting stockings. Mrs Davidson judged the competitions, which resulted as follow:—Flowers, Mrs Graham Scales 1, Miss Dora Whiting 2. Article made from one yard of cretonne, Mrs Graham Scales (bat), 1, Mrs Hamber (darning bag) 2. Home-made soap, Mrs Graham Scales 1, Mrs Percy Ruck 2. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Whiting and Airs Davidson. Afternodn tea was served by the members.

FAIRTON. Airs Anderson presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Fairton Women’s Institute, held in the hall on Thursday afternoon. The meeting opened with the singing of “God Save the King.” Airs Thompson gave an interesting demonstration on making silk cushions and eiderdowns, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. The winners of the competitions were: —Cocoanut ice: Airs McCall 1, Airs Chappell 2, Airs Slade 3. Flowers: Airs Anderson 1, Aliss Anderson 2, Airs McCall 3. Baby’s singlet knitted of New Zealand, wool: Aliss B. Anderson I, Airs Anderson and Airs Dunphy (equal) 2, Airs AlcCall 4. Cold meat mould: Mrs AlcCall 1, Airs Beach 2, Airs Nutbrown 3. Green pea pods: Airs AVillis 1, Airs 0. Evans 21 The hostesses were Airs Hooper, Aliss G. 'Dunphy and Aliss O. Evans.
