A drastic curtailment of coroners’ powers, especially to prevent inquests from becoming trials, is urged by the departmental committee, which recommends in addition the abolition of veidicts of “felo-de-se” and “suicide while of unsound mind,” and the substitu- , tion of “died by his own hand”; the withdrawal of a coroner’s power to commit a person for trial for murder, manslaughter, or infanticide; the prohibition of newspaper reports of suicide cases (except the name, the address and the verdict). , The committee condemns coroners frequent comments about persons unable to defend themselyes and states that the coroners’ ofiico should be confined to barristers and solicitors.
