TRANSPORT OF GOODS.
ASHBURTON LICENSES. AMENDMENTS GRANTED. The No. 8 Transport Licensing Authority, sitting at Christchurch yesterday, amended the goods license held by J. W. Ramsay, of Ashburton, to provide for an increased weight of vehicle. Porter’s Motors (Ashburton) sought license amendments to provide for the carriage of passengers and parcels witli the Huntingdon School service on Terrace Road. The objectors were W. Belcher, holder of the mail contract on the adjoining roads, and the Railways Department through Mr Brittenden. Residents had petitioned for an amendment of the mail contract to include Terrace road, it was stated. An application by W. Belcher lor the carriage of parcels was granted. The Railways Department’s objeetin was on principle, it being held that it was a dangerous precedent to allow the carriage of parcels on a school conveyance. Belcher claimed that lie was already able to give all the parcel service required. When Porter explained that his was the only Service which could take passengers into Ashburton in the evening and out in the morning, lie was granted a license for the purpose.
