Forty pistols and 3000 cartridges concealed in the hold were seized when plain-clothes police raided the steamer City of Christchurch on her arrival from New York. The police arrested 18 of the crew for smuggling arms. Political terrorists have so increased recently that a special force of police was formed to raid suspected ships.
