THE HIGH SCHOOL
TRANSPORTATION OF PUPILS. ASSISTANCE TO BE GIVEN. STATEMENT TO THE BOARD. The Ashburton ' High School Board of Governors met in the Borough Council Chambers tips morning, when there were present Dr. G. I. Miller (chairman), Messrs J. Brown, E. H. Orr, W. H. Woods, W. T. Lill, F. Frampton, J. W. Bowden, and H. 11. C. McElrea. The chairman referred to the very poor attendance at the school farm on parents’ day, and Mr Lill said the Board should either make a, big function of it or drop it. Parents’ day was a farce as organised at present. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £129 9s lid. The headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) reported that the school had opened that morning, hut it was impossible to give roll numbers as there were still some pupils assisting in harvesting operations. The question of the selection of a site for the new wool-classing room was referred to a special sub-commit-tee. The Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union wrote stating that it would give its support to any endeavours made to provide free transport for pupils from country areas. The chairman said he had it on the best of authority that if the parents made some effort in regard to the problem in the first term, the authorities would place the district on the same footing as others. A report regarding the school farm stated that the harvesting operations were well under way. Ninety fat lambs had been sent away and had brought £1 a head. A vote of thanks was accorded the chairman for his efforts in regard to obtaining the Government grant foi the wool-classing room.
