BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), Messrs E. H. Orr, R. Kerr, J. Thompson, W. H. Robinson, H. R. C. McElrea, J. T. Pratley, S. Mitchell, J. Shaw, E. Buchanan, F. J. E. Smallbone and D . J. Connor. , ~ , The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £414 17s 6d, the chief items being rates £9O 9s 2d, rents £1 17s, abattoir fees £27 19s 6d and licenses £7 5s 9d. The Stationmaster at Ashburton (Mr G. 11. Chambers) wrote that he had referred the Council’s reference to the danger of cycling on the . ertiead bridge to the Railway District Traihe Manager at Christchurch. The No. 15 District Highways Council wrote regarding the declaration of Walnut Avenue as a main highway and stating that maintenance expenditure on this road would carry a subsidy of £3 for £l. , , . , An invitation to attend the annual competitions in Mona Square on Saturday afternoon and the social in the evening was extended to members of the Council by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade and was accepted. Domain Board Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator on work carried out by his staff in the last two weeks. The Ashburton Basketball Association was granted permission to. sink twelve boxed holes in the courts in the Domain to take the goal post uprights. The holes, it was stated, would be plugged when not in use. Cemetery Board Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed that there was a credit balance of £9 15s lid. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £ls 2s 6d.
