WASHOUTS AND SLIPS.

IN THE WANGANUI DISTRICT. BREAK IN CITY WATER SURELY. WANGANUI, Fob. 3. Extensive damage has been caused in the back country of the Waitotara County by slips and washouts. In the Wanganui County the Wanganui river road is completely blocked. The morning train from Palmerston North was held up by flooding in the Wangaehu Valley. The water reached to the girders of the railway bridge, and as a precautionary measure the train was delayed. The water is now receding. Apparently there is no structural damage, either to this or the traffic bridge. The road is still blocked at Wangaehu, and water from the river is running through the first floor of the hotel. Losses of stock in the valley are reported to be very heavy, one settler having 600 sheep drowned. With the exception of a few green patches, the valley is a sheet of water, and the stock are huddled together on the higher spots. There is considerable flooding on the low lying parts of Wanganui city. The road slipping away caused a break in 'the city water supply, which is now depending on the Westinere reservoir.
